One hugely important site is Westerplatte – better known as the spot where World War II kicked off when on 1 September 1939 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein began shelling a Polish garrison. A monument stands here in honour of the 182 men bravely fended off the attacks for a week before eventually surrendering.
