For a canal trip with a difference cruise along the Ostroda-Elblag canal. It all starts as you would expect, gently gliding along the waterway, but after a couple of hours the canal peters out and you are faced by a seemingly insurmountable hill. No need to worry as, with effortless ease, the boat is pulled on to a rail-mounted trolley and you sedately climb the hill to be deposited back into the canal at the top. Who needs locks!

As the city of Gdansk discovers its prosperous and sophisticated past, one can admire a huge diversity of local styles. Walking from the Golden Gate, the traditional entry point for kings along the Royal Way, it doesn't take long to become absorbed into the warmth and friendliness of this city. Gdansk may be smaller than Warsaw and Krakow, but remains the perfect destination for a more relaxing weekend break.

Despite its small size, Gdansk has more than its fair share of historical landmarks. One hugely important site is Westerplatte – better known as the spot where World War II kicked off when on 1 September 1939 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein began shelling a Polish garrison. A monument stands here in honour of the 182 men bravely fended off the attacks for a week before eventually surrendering.

All our Gdansk city break prices include 3 nights accommodation with breakfast, return flights in economy class and all airport taxes.
