Greenland is one of the best places in the world to witness the northern lights. The Aurora Borealis as it is officially known, occur all year round in Greenland but cannot be seen during the summer months due to the midnight sun. However, from early autumn the night sky is regularly illuminated by the northern lights' green glow, causing excitement amongst travellers and local people alike. The Inuit people of Greenland have handed down tales through generations of how the northern lights came about, including some superstitions on what you should do when you see them.
A well-known legend says that when the northern lights dance in the night sky, it means that the dead are playing football with a walrus skull! Another tale advises that children will be particularly intelligent if they are conceived in the magical glow of the northern lights...
The phenomenon is often seen around midnight and is best experienced on a dark, clear night from September to the beginning of April, although in South Greenland there have been sightings from as early as August. We offer a variety of Northern Lights Greenland holidays to enjoy that include seeing parts of this remote country by day and enjoying the light show by night. Greenland offers husky safaris, glacier hikes, fishing, whale watching and more.
