Kamyanets-Podilsky is a city located on the Smotrych River in western Ukraine, north-east of Chernivtsi and close the Moldovan border. The town is located where a sharp bend in the river has formed a natural moat. The wide tree-lined Smotrych River canyon up to 50 metres deep and the 11th-century Old Town stands clearly apart on a tall, sheer-walled island of rock, connected by a thin bridge to its picture postcard-looking medieval fortress. Lonely Planet describes it as “the sort of place that has writers lunging for their thesauruses in search of superlatives. Even words like 'dramatic', 'stunning' and 'breathtaking' just will not do”.
