The Sungai Kapur Virgin Jungle Reserve is a protected area in Sabah, spanning 1,250,000 hectares. Famous for its pristine, untouched rainforest, it is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The reserve features towering dipterocarp trees, a freshwater swamp, and a mangrove forest, housing numerous plant and wildlife species, some of which are endangered and found nowhere else on Earth. Wildlife found in the reserve includes elusive Borneo Pygmy elephants, orangutans, and clouded leopards, as well as smaller mammals like the Malay civet, palm civet, mousedeer, leopard cat, pangolin, and many others. The reserve is home to over 300 bird species, including majestic hornbills, vibrant kingfishers, and elusive pittas, making it a fantastic birdwatching destination. If you're fortunate, you may spot the rare Bornean ground cuckoo and Bornean crested fireback foraging for a meal on the forest floor.
