Today, the overriding impression of Warsaw is one of a thriving capital surrounding a revived Old Town. Like other old European capitals, Warsaw is a city of elegant boutiques, excellent cafés and world-class museums. Poles and foreign visitors alike find plenty to keep themselves occupied. Any visit should include the Royal Castle, housing some of Eastern Europe's finest art, the magnificent Cathedral of St John and Wilanów Palace.
Wherever you stand in Warsaw you can't get away from the 42-storey controversial Stalin's Tower, a gift from Stalin to the people of Poland. A reminder of the domination of the Soviet Union, resembling the wedding-cake style of the Seven Sisters in Moscow, now it is the Palace of Culture and Science. Go to the 30th floor observation deck for the best views of Warsaw. Locals joke it is the best view as you can't see the tower from it!
