This Yogyakarta day tour offers a unique experience combining local interaction, cultural insights, and an easy cycling ride. The tour includes a leisurely bike ride from the active volcano of Gunung Merapi, through small villages and countryside farms, to the temple complex of Prambanan.
At 9:00 AM from your hotel in Yogyakarta (or 8:00 AM from Amanjiwo), you'll be picked up and taken to a village near Gunung Merapi, about an hour from the city. This village offers spectacular views of the active volcano and the numerous ravines formed by lava flows. Starting from this picturesque location, you'll embark on a 15 km, mostly downhill bike ride. As you cycle through various villages and farmlands, you'll have opportunities to stop for photos and interact with locals. Your guide will explain the local agricultural practices, such as tobacco, rice, and snake fruit farming. After the 15 km ride, you'll have lunch at a local restaurant with a great view of Prambanan in the distance.
Post-lunch, you'll be driven to the Prambanan complex, a set of temples built in the 9th century. The temples thought to commemorate the return of a Hindu dynasty to Java, were in ruins for centuries until reconstruction began in the 1930s. Now mostly restored, your guide will explain the history, construction, and religious significance of the temples. Following the tour, you'll be transferred back to your hotel in Yogyakarta.
