***Direct British Airways flights from London Gatwick to Ivalo available from 3rd December 2024***
Experience winter in Finnish Lapland from the comfort of your own private Aurora Cabin at Aurora Village. Fly to Ivalo via Helsinki, in the Finnish far north, where the dark night skies are painted bright with the ethereal lights of the aurora borealis almost every clear evening during the winter months, and where the snow-drenched landscapes offer the perfect setting for adventure. The cabins at Aurora Village are tucked away in a remote part of the forests of Inari county, and boast a section of glass roofing above the cosy beds, so the northern lights can be spotted whilst tucked up under the covers. The 'village' entertains guests with husky sledging, snowmobiling, snowshoe hiking and ice fishing.
Fly to Ivalo, in the northern reaches of Finnish Lapland. Transfer to Aurora Village and check in to your Aurora cabin room for four nights. On arrival, enjoy a welcome basket containing sparkling drinks.
The adventures begin this evening, with an Aurora sleigh excursion. Get comfortable in the back of a cosy sledge, and gaze upwards at the skies to (hopefully) watch the northern lights dance, as you are pulled gently across the snowy region by a snowmobile. Sledges are enclosed with a glass roof, and are lined with lamb fur. This evening also includes a stop for hot drinks and snacks, and photographs will be taken and emailed to you for the perfect souvenir. (D)
Today transfer to a nearby husky farm to spend the day getting to know the dogs and trying your hand at husky mushing. Sledges are shared between two people, so alternate between driving the dogs and sitting back to enjoy the ride in the sledge. Travel through the snowy forests of the region and stop halfway for lunch and to learn more about huskies from your guide and professional musher. (B,L,D)
Take a short snowmobile drive out onto the local frozen river to have a go at ice fishing, one of the local's favourite winter hobbies. Learn to drill a hole in the thick ice and try to bait a fish - if you catch one, take it back to the hotel chef to prepare for lunch or dinner. (B,D)
One of the best ways to get up close to the pristine natural environment in Lapland is to strap on a pair of snowshoes and head out for a hike. Today follow your guide through the wintry forest paths, spotting animal tracks and perhaps even some arctic animals, as you learn about the local wildlife and nature. (B, D)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)
