The Azores is a great destination for an amazing family holiday, especially the main island of Sao Miguel. There are lots of great activities to chose from, even for the most discerning of teens. From canyoning, coasteering to sailing and from canoeing to whale watching. Budding geologists love the belching steam vents and volcanic fumaroles at Furnas.
We think the weather is perfect on the Azores too - it is neither too hot or too cold with an average summer temperature of around 26 degrees. For October half term expect cooler climes of around 19 degrees, but still ideal for all the activities you can do. We have included a family suite at a great four-star hotel with an outdoor pool. We can include other accommodation options such as self-catering apartments and car hire if required.
Fly via Lisbon to Ponta Delgada. Transfer to your hotel and check in to your family suite for 7 nights. The family suite is a great choice for families with 1 master bedroom and a second bedroom with twin beds. There are 2 bathrooms and a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Enjoy a morning relaxing in the zen garden or taking a dip in the pool. Perhaps hire some bikes and explore the sights of Ponta Delgada on two wheels.
There is a choice between an exciting RIB or catamaran for this afternoon's whale watching excursion. Expert guides share their knowledge about the cetaceans you are likely to spot at sea today. (B)
Today transfer to the lake in Furnas for a morning canoeing experience. There are 2 persons per sit-on-top canoes. Paddle to the centre of the lagoon and learn how volcanoes have shaped this island, continue to the opposite bank and see a neo-Gothic style chapel built in the 19th century. Make a short stop to visit the fumaroles. where you can witness how the traditional Cozida das Furnas is cooked using the volcanic heat underground. Of course, lunch is at one of these traditional restaurants tasting this dish of various meats and steamed vegetables.
After lunch, visit the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden and enjoy a guided tour of some of the pathways that make up this breathtaking garden. Afterwards enjoy a dip in the geo-thermal bath before returning to Ponta Delgada. (B,L)
Today set off to explore the western part of the island. Stop off at Pico do Carvão - a viewpoint overlooking a landscape filled with every shade of green you can imagine. Enjoy views of both the north and south coasts of Sao Miguel. Set off an off-road adventure to see the interior of the Sete Cidades caldera and continue along the mountain ridge trail around the caldera with its incredible views. Drive down to the lagoons and enjoy a lunch in a local restaurant.
In the afternoon head towards the city of Ribeira Grande, stop off at one of the black sand beaches - Santa Bárbara beach, where a stage of the world surfing championship takes place. Visit the historic centre of Ribeira Grande and the Ponta do Cintrão to view the incredible coastline.
Begin an off-road adventure up the northern slope of Fogo Mountain and stop at the Caldeira Velha Natural Park, rich with endemic plants, thermal water pools and a beautiful waterfall. Reach the top of Lagoa do Fogo, for incredible views of this huge caldera with its striking blue and green colours. Return to Ponta Delgada late afternoon. (B,L)

Today is free for you to explore the charming old town of Ponta Delgada with its cobbled narrow streets lined with colourful houses. Peek into old churches, walk along pretty tiled pavements and enjoy a coffee in one of its many squares. Perhaps visit the Fort of São Brás - a 16th century fortress which houses the Azores Military Museum. The waterfront promenade following the contours of the harbour is made for long leisurely evening strolls contemplating which delicious restaurant to dine in. (B)

The volcanic island coastline hides areas that few ever get to see. This exploration and adventure means scrambling and traversing the tide line, snorkelling and swimming the volcanic bottom with their fauna and flora or climbing to cliff jumping into sea.
Enjoy another free day to relax around the hotel or explore the city further. Perhaps book additional family excursions such as chartering a private yacht (skipper included) for either a half or full day sailing. Enjoy the possibility of fishing. snorkelling and stand up paddle boarding. For families that like to golf - perhaps enjoy a round or two with amazing sea vistas.
